Spokane Food Security Council Meets Sept. 15

Since the Spokane Food Security Council last met, a number of important developments have occurred in our community. The Community Nutrition Program at the farmers' market expanded significantly. First, with the addition of low-income seniors, and then, the mothers and children component gained state support and many, many more WIC clients were able to participate. From $3,000 in fresh food provided to clients in 2000, the Community Nutrition Program has grown to providing well over $50,000 in local produce this year.

While the role of local farm production expanded in serving local needs, low-income families were also benefiting from the work of the Second Harvest Spokane Community Gardens Program. Many backyard gardens were developed and community gardens were built on land adjacent to multi-family housing. District 81 created a demonstration community garden at Garry Middle School. And, elsewhere in our community, the effort has continued to inform the public of the need for fresh fruits and vegetables in a healthy diet.

Spokane Tilth has been pleased to have participated in some of these efforts and will reconvene the Spokane Food Security Council at 3:30 PM, September 15th at the Community Building (35 West Main, in downtown Spokane). We would appreciate your participation as we plan for the future of increased food security for our community. Please plan to attend and if you have an agenda item, let us know.

We are intending to have the September 15th meeting in the rooftop garden of the Community Building. If the weather is inclement, another room has been reserved indoors.
