What we've done...

  • Assisted the Spokane Farmers' Market and Advocates for Families and Farms in bringing the WIC Farmers' Market Nutrition Program to Spokane (in the form of a pilot project). This program allows WIC recipients to obtain fresh, local produce at the farmers' market with special vouchers.

  • Helped develop and obtain funding for the Community Nutrition program that provides nutrition education to WIC families at the Spokane Farmers' Market.

  • Initiated a successful, statewide campaign to include organic foods in the federally funded Women, Infants and Children Supplemental Nutrition Program (WIC). Spokane Tilth formed an effective coalition with other groups and, as a result, beginning in October, 2000, WIC recipients have been be able to obtain organic milk using their WIC coupons.

  • Sparked a statewide campaign to preserve the Community Potluck Tradition.

  • Sponsored and co-sponsored several events such as a workshop by an expert on community food systems, a fruit tree pruning workshop and a talk by Land Institute founder Wes Jackson and the annual Eastern Washington Foodshed Symposium an annual spring Seed Swap and more.

  • Joined forces with the Washington Sustainable Food and Farming Network and the Western Sustainable Agriculture Working Group to successfully advocate for sustainable agriculture policies and programs in the 2002 federal Farm Bill.

  • Opened our office on the second floor of the Community Building at W. 35 Main Ave. in Spokane.

  • Began publication of the Spokane Tilth Journal, an Ecological Food and Farming Quarterly, to provide relevant information about the place we live, our environment, our food supply, our agrarian foundation and our people.

  • Organized the clean-up and beautification by Gonzaga University's Seton Women of one of Spokane's largest community gardens, the Highbridge Garden West of Peaceful Valley. Contact us if you're interested obtaining a plot in this garden.

  • conducted research into identifying how Spokane County colleges and universities can serve more locally produced foods in their food venues.

  • Helped create the Community Nutrition Program that provides nutrition education services to low-income families at the Spokane Farmers' Market.
